UMAT Course Guides

Students who wish to gain entry into Health Science courses are becoming increasingly aware of the necessity of an outstanding performance in the UMAT and (if relevant) the health science interview. Each year the candidate has only one chance to gain an excellent UMAT score and to perform well in each interview. The student who understands the significance of the UMAT knows that it is much more difficult to know how to prepare for a test which has no practice papers available to UMAT candidates.

PREMED offers guidance and direction to the dedicated student who wishes to undertake a career in a Health Science course, such as Medicine, Dentistry, Oral Health Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy or Optometry. Students are able to gain information about the structure and content of their course, as well as the selection criteria, and are able to discuss their choice with a well-informed and educated instructor.

Students are also able to discuss the components of their desired course with a number of other candidates and also successful students who have gained entry into a Health Science course. This is helpful in gaining an understanding of the demands of the study and what is in store for them post-study.

Students can also talk to each other about their progress through the UMAT preparation, as well as post up questions and assist others with their enquiries.

PREMED offers students tools to assist them in their UMAT preparation. The Perfect UMAT Prep course for UMAT consists of a two-day clinic, with the first day focusing on UMAT preparation and the second day sharpening the students’ interpersonal skills for the interview. PREMED’s Online UMAT Prep, offers an alternative UMAT preparation approach to its students who may be unable to attend a two day clinic due to their location or other circumstances., as it begins well before the two-day clinic.

PREMED also offers its UMAT students one-on-one interview training for Scholarships (all categories), Professional fellowships (Aus/NS/UK), Undergraduate or Postgraduate Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Oral Health Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, and Alternative Medicine.

The UMAT is composed of three sections, consisting of 44 Section I, 36 Section II and 30 Section Three questions, and each set of questions assesses different skills and qualities.

Section I of the UMAT consists of stimulus material derived from a variety of sources (newspapers, magazines and journal articles) which presents the UMAT candidate with a problem that requires an answer.

Section II of the UMAT includes scenario-type questions and dialogue stimulus which requires the student to identify the emotions being conveyed in the stimulus or to identify the most appropriate response to a situation.

Section Three of the UMAT presents a sequence of diagrams which needs to be rearranged in a particular order, as well as shapes disguised within a lattice of lines and shading, which the student needs to find.
