How to Register for UMAT
Date of UMAT 2008: Wednesday 30th July 2008
UMAT registrations open: mid-April 2008
Late registrations close: 2 weeks after the closing date
Release of UMAT2008 Information Booklet: mid-April 2008
The UMAT candidate has the option to register online (at www.acer.edu.au/umat) or using the hard copy registration form in the UMATInfobook2008 (available from www.acer.edu.au). The UMAT candidate must provide the information necessary for the registration process, which will also be used for research purposes. Confidentiality will be strictly maintained throughout the process.
The UMAT candidate is not to contact the UMAT office to ensure the receipt of their registration. An official confirmation of the registration and payment will be sent out two weeks prior to the test date. Furthermore, it is the UMAT candidate’s responsibility to ensure that their registration reaches the office on time, taking into account postal delays. The UMAT candidate should not entrust the delivery of their registration to the UMAT office by the due date to anyone else.
Concession car holders are not able to register online. It is advisable that the registrations are lodged well before the dead line.
A late fee applies for registering after the dead line, which must be submitted within two weeks after the closing date for the registration. Late registrations must be accompanied by $55.00 in addition to the standard UMAT preparation fee of $140.00. If you are sitting the UMAT in London or in Singapore , an additional $165.00 must be included with the standard registration fee. Holders of a Health Care Card are eligible for a discounted registration fee of $50.00 if they present a copy of the document to the UMAT office. Each student is responsible for completing their own registration process.
The UMAT candidate is able to pay online by credit card (with an online registration), or otherwise the hard copy registration form may be accompanied by cheque or Australian Post money order.
If the UMAT candidate should wish to cancel their registration, a cancellation request should be sent to the UMAT office (by post, email or fax) and a fee of $30 will be charged. The UMAT candidate will receive his or her full refund if the cancellation request is lodged in by the due date (refer to the ACER website for more details).
In case of illness or misadventure on the day of the UMAT
Candidates who are prevented from attending the test on the day due to a serious and unforeseen illness or misadventure are given the option to sit the test on an alternative day which will be scheduled within two weeks of the main test date. This is only an option for those candidates who are suffering from a serious difficulty. The UMAT candidate who forgets to bring their photo and signature bearing ID or Admission Ticket or who arrives to the testing venue after the doors have been closed will not be allowed to take the test on the alternative date.
The candidate experiencing serious illness or misadventure must inform the UMAT office at least one week before the test day (if possible) and provide a medical explanation from a registered health professional. If the difficulty should arise on the day of the exam, the UMAT candidate should inform ACER in writing within three working days of the test date and provide a medical explanation from a registered health professional, stating the situation which prevented attendance on the day of the test.
Special Testing Conditions
If you are affected by serious hearing, visual, physical or other disability, which will hinder your performance in the UMAT, you are advised to submit a letter with the registration form, together with a medical explanation from a registered health professional. The explanation should clearly state the reasons why this condition will hinder your performance in the UMAT. All possible provisions will be made for your needs.
The UMAT Registration form
The UMAT registration form should be completed with a HB or a No.2 pencil. The relevant information (such as name, date of birth, sex and resident status, Indigenous Australian status, the Language spoken at home and the education level) should be printed in the boxes and the subsequent ovals should be completely filled.
Note:
- Only candidates who are currently studying at year 12 level or higher are eligible to sit the UMAT.
- Remember to learn your school’s postcode if it is within Australia , as you will need this to complete the registration form.
- You must complete only one of the following two sections: current Year 12 students, OR ALL other candidates.
The UMAT candidate is also required to give details of their current postal address and telephone number, as well as email address. It is important that the student advises the UMAT office of change of contact details as the Admission Ticket and the UMAT results will be mailed to the address provided by the student.
The Admission Ticket will inform the UMAT candidate of the address of the centre to which he or she has been assigned.
The UMAT Candidate Number
When the registration has been processed, the UMAT candidate will be issued with a UMAT candidate number, which will also appear on the Admission Ticket they will receive two weeks prior to the test date. It is vital that the student keeps a record of their UMAT candidate number as this must be provided during any correspondence with the UMAT office as well as for university applications.
The Admission Ticket
The UMAT candidate will receive their Admission ticket two weeks prior to the day of the UMAT, and the UMAT office should be notified if there is any delay in receipt of this document. The Admission ticket will state which testing centre you should attend, it will have your personal details (which you should double check after receiving the ticket and inform the UMAT office of any errors), and it will state your UMAT candidate number. The Admission ticket must be brought to the test, and without it the student will not be permitted to sit the UMAT.
Testing Centre
- The UMAT candidate will be advised of the testing centre at which they should sit the UMAT preparation on the Admission Ticket.
- The student should make sure to allow enough time to arrive at the venue as they will not be allowed to sit the UMAT if they arrive after the doors have been closed.
- The student should take into account traffic or delayed/cancelled trains when deciding on the time of departure for the exam.
- Prior to the commencement of the exam, the student will undergo checking of Admission tickets and identification.
The student must ensure to bring to the test day:
- the UMAT Admission Ticket
- photo and signature-bearing identification
- pencils (HB or No.2) and eraser
The student is only permitted to take the above mentioned equipment with them into the exam. Mobile phones, calculators, other electronic devices, a pencil case, ruler, etc. are not permitted inside the venue as they are considered as acts of cheating.
Identification
The student will not be allowed to sit the UMAT without acceptable identification. The identification must contain:
- Recent photograph
- Date of birth
- Signature
- Name
- Acceptable forms of identification include;
- Passport
- Current driver’s licence or learner’s permit
- Current key pass, proof of age card or 18+ card
- A letter of identification from your school, with your name, date of birth and passport photograph glued to the letter covered by the school’s stamp, the signature of the official who has issued the identification letter, as well as your signature
NB The photo identification must not be laminated.
- If the student should behave in an unethical manner, such as:
- Providing false information during registration
- Cheating during the test
the student will be penalised.
- Cheating consists of:
- Endeavouring to take the test on the behalf of another person or vice versa
- Attempting to remove any part of the exam paper or answer sheet from the testing room
- Failing to comply with the instructions at all times
- Failing to stop writing for a section when told to do so
- Attempting to discuss questions with other students
- Disturbing other students
- Using equipment which was prohibited to be used in the exam
- Attempting to take the UMAT prior to the final year of schooling
UMAT results
- A statement of results will be posted to each student
- UMAT results will not be given over the phone, by fax or by email
- Results will be provided to universities for university selection purposes
- The UMAT scores:
- Three sets of scores will be received, one for each section
- A percentile score will be provided, which will rank you according to how well you did compared with the rest of the candidates
- Are valid for two years, i.e. UMAT scores from 2008 can be used to apply to courses in years 2008 and 2008, but not 2009
- If you undertake the UMAT twice, only the most recent score will be looked at for your applications
- You cannot combine results from two separate UMAT scores
- You may sit the UMAT as many times as you like
- UMAT scores do not show the number of questions you had right. You only get a scaled score
- Scores are scaled as UMAT is not at the same level of difficulty from year to year. Scaling accounts for these differences
- UMAT scores can be compared from year to year due to scaling
- The scaling does not change your rank compared with other students
- The maximum possible UMAT score for each section is usually 100
- Each section of the UMAT measures the qualities on its own scale
- The universities can put more weighting on different sections of the UMAT in their selection
- To use UMAT scores from 2005 when applying for courses in 2008, you should provide your UMAT candidate number when applying.
- Remember that UMAT cut-offs may change from one year to the next and the scores which have gained you an interview in one year, may not be sufficient to gain you an interview the following year.
Remarking
- The UMAT office will not enter into debates about UMAT scores.
- Special consideration will not be given to students who are suffering from an illness or misadventure on the day of the exam.
- Scores will not be adjusted for students who have suffered from a disadvantage.
- Errors in marking of the UMAT re extremely unlikely.
- The UMAT scores are recorded and verifies thoroughly.
- After receiving their UMAT results, the candidate can request a remark. This involves manual rechecking of the UMAT scores followed by comparison with the computer generated results.
- The candidate should write to the UMAT office to request a remark and must pay an additional fee of $85, by the dead line.
- If an error is found, the student will get their full refund of the money.
- Note that students will not receive their remarked results in time to make their university selections.
